Aproape instantaneu cu anuntul facut ieri(Septembrie 1) de catre cei de la Zondervan referitor la modificarile uneia dintre cele mai populare versiuni ale Bibliei – NIV – s-a redeschis “dosarul genurilor”- despre limbajul si traducerea corecta a genurilor in textile biblice.

USA Today il citeaza pe Douglas Moo, presedintele Comitetului de traducere NIV care a declarat ca va fi revizuita fiecare referinta biblica la genuri pe care au facut-o intr-o recenta traducere TNIV-Today New International Version. La vremea cand a aparut TNIV, a primit critici din partea majoritatii evanghelice pentru controversele aparute in mentionarea genurilor si confuzia promovata asupra unor texte care il vizau pe Isus Christos.

Integritatea textului biblic a fost afectata direct si acest lucru s-a facut doar pentru a se merge intr-o directie “politically correct” fata de oameni, desi era “politically incorrect” fata de Dumnezeu. Astfel s-a ajuns la situatii in care Sfanta Treime este suprasexualizata, fiind vopsita in roz sau blue in tot felul de interpetari crestin-progresiste.

Schimbarea intelesului: de la singularul “man” to pluralul “human beings” care aduce in discutie conceptul evreiesc al ordinei in Creatie. Mai e barbatul primul?

Schimbarea intelesului: Implicarea lui Dumnezeu in definirea lucurilor este importanta in Biblie. TNIV refuza din nou terminologia masculina.

1997

• May 27, 1997 – In the early-morning hours prior to a meeting at the headquarters of Focus on the Family called by Dr. James Dobson, Zondervan and International Bible Society (IBS) call a press conference at which they issue a press release, indicating that “IBS has abandoned all plans for gender-related changes in future editions of the New International Version (NIV).”
• May 27, 1997 – A meeting called by Dr. James Dobson is held at Focus on the Family to discuss the New International Version Inclusive Language Edition (NIVI). Participants in this meeting included Zondervan president Bruce Ryskamp, IBS president Lars Dunberg, representatives of WORLD Magazine and CBMW, and Dr. Dobson.

  • Statement and guidelines for translation of gender language in Scripture-the Colorado Springs Guidelines (CSG)-is issued following the meeting and is signed by all participants (A final draft was produced and signed by all participants on May 30, 1997).

1999

• May 14, 1999 – An International Bible Society press release announced that it was encouraging the NIV’s Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) to continue with its work. Even though the 1984 NIV would continue to be available with no changes, the Press Release said, “IBS encourages the CBT to continue translating the biblical text with clarity, accuracy, and faithfulness so that this work can be reviewed by the IBS Board for possible publication” of a new English translation.The IBS web site included further information in a “Frequently Asked Questions about the NIV” section. It indicated that the new translation will not be called the NIV, but no name had yet been chosen.
• June 5, 1999 – World published a cover story, “There They Go Again…” (pp. 14-16). According to the article, the IBS will not publish a new “edition” of the NIV but will publish a new “rendition” of the Bible. The article also quoted a letter by the IBS Vice-President for Translations, Eugene Rubingh, dated March 19, 1999, in which he said, “I, the CBT and practically everyone involved, thoroughly support gender-accurate language [the IBS expression for regendering]. The matter is one of timing, of finding the appropriate hour to move ahead” (p. 16).
• June 24, 1999 – An online news service, Religion Today, published a feature story, “‘Gender-accurate’ Bible due to be published,” in which it reported an interview with Steve Johnson, communications director for the IBS, who said that a “gender-accurate” translation of the Bible is due to be published in 2003 or 2004. The article reported, “The new translation will not be called the NIV, but will be similar to it, Johnson said. ‘The style and character will remain the same.’ Wording of the new translation is being researched by scholars who make up the Committee on Bible Translation, the group that originally translated the NIV.”However, the article noted that others were troubled by the plans of the IBS andCBT: “Some critics now say IBS’s decision to proceed with the new translation circumvents the 1997 agreement. Dr. R. Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, told Religion News Service that he felt ‘a sense of betrayal’ because the agreement seems to have ‘no effect.’”

2002

• January 18, 2002 – International Bible Society president Peter Bradley sent a certified letter informing several key evangelical leaders that since the May 1997 meeting, the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) “has continued its work of reviewing and updating the NIV.” Since the CBT’s new text, Today’s New International Version (TNIV), did not conform to the Colordao Springs Guidelines (CSG), Bradley announced IBS’s answer to their dilemma: “IBS is withdrawing its endorsement of the CSG.”Bradley stated that at the end of January 2002 “IBS will be sending out nearly 40,000 prepublication editions of the TNIV New Testament to key gatekeepers and evangelical leaders nationwide to solicit their feedback.”
• January 28, 2002
  • In a press release, the International Bible Society and Zondervan announced plans to publish Today’s New International Version (TNIV).
  • CBMW issued a press release in response.
• January 31, 2002 – Christianity Today published an article entitled, “Comparing the three NIVs.”
• February 1, 2002
  • 37 evangelical scholars issued a joint statement stating, “In light of troubling translation inaccuracies-primarily (but not exclusively) in relation to gender language-that introduce distortions of the meanings that were conveyed better by the original NIV, we cannot endorse the TNIV translation as sufficiently accurate to commend to the church.”
  • In a story covering the statement issued by the scholars, Baptist Press quoted theologian Dr. James I. Packer. Though Packer did not sign the statement, he told Baptist Press, “This is a retrograde move that the translators have made. . . .”
• February 6, 2002 – Focus on the Family president Dr. James Dobson issued a press release stating his belief “that this new work is a step backward in the field of biblical translation. Accordingly, I am now adding my name to the list of those who disagree with the liberties IBS has taken with God’s Word in the new translation.”
• February 9, 2002 – World magazine addresses the TNIV announcement in an article entitled, “NIV’s Twisted Sister.”
• February 12, 2002
  • The International Bible Society and Zondervan released An Open Statement About the TNIV.”
  • CBMW issued a response to the IBS/Zondervan Open Letter.
• February 23, 2004
  • On its website, CBMW interacts with statements from the TNIV website explaining the Committee on Bible Translation’s rationale for its rendering of several gender-related verses.
  • World magazine published a cover story on the TNIV controversy. The edition included the following stories:
    • “Five Days Early, Five Years Late”
    • “Should We Trust the TNIV?”
    • “Should We Trust IBS?”
    • “Does it Mean What it Says?”
• April 20, 2002 – A World magazine article (“Dobson’s Choice”) quotes a letter from Focus on the Family president Dr. James Dobson to IBS leadership. In his letter, Dobson responded to an IBS letter issued by IBS director of donor communications. Dobson stated he was “deeply concerned about the misrepresentation that continues to mark discussion pertaining to the TNIV.” Dobson wrote, “When all is said and done, I’m afraid the only conclusion we can draw is that an element of duplicity has been guiding this process. . . .”

• May 28, 2002 – 100 Christian leaders issued a joint statement indicating that they “cannot endorse the TNIV as sufficiently trustworthy to commend to the church.”
• June 11, 2002 – The International Bible Society issued a press release quoting a statement from the Forum of Bible Agencies (FBA): “It is the consensus of the FBA that the TNIV falls within the Forum’s translation principles and procedures.” Affirming the FBA as representing “the world’s leading experts on Bible translation,” the IBS release listed all of the FBA member agencies. IBS would later remove this statement from its website (see June 24 and 27; July 2 and 27 below).
• June 12, 2002 – At its annual meeting, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) passed a resolution expressing disappointment with IBS and Zondervan and insisting that it could not commend the TNIV to Southern Baptists or the larger Christian community. In addition, Lifeway Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention announced that it would not carry the TNIV.
• June 24, 2002 – The Forum of Bible Agencies (FBA) issued a press release in response to the June 11 release from IBS: “Forum of Bible Agencies Does Not Endorse TNIV.” According to the release, “the FBA emphasized it has never endorsed the TNIV, as strongly implied in the release issued by [IBS and Zondervan]. Other Forum members are aggrieved by the release because of the confusion it has generated among their constituents, as it is not the policy of the FBA to approve, endorse or support members translations” (See July 2 and 27 below).
• June 27, 2002 – The Bible League (a member of the FBA) issued its own press release in response to the June 11 IBS press release. Bible League President Rev. Dennis Mulder stated, “Contrary to some reports, the Bible League has not approved or endorsed the TNIV. In March, the Bible League determined not to use the TNIV in any of our worldwide ministry.”Two additional organizations, Trans World Radio and New Tribes Missions, would later publicly deny any endorsement of the TNIV. Though neither organization holdsFBA membership, their names were included in the list of FBA member organizations in the original IBS press release.
• June / July 2002 – CBMW placed ads in three Christian magazines: World, Charisma, and Christian Retailing. The ads included the joint statement of concern by 100 Christian leaders regarding the TNIV (see May 28 above). Christianity Today refused to run the ad.
• July 1, 2002 – At its General Assembly, the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) passed a resolution expressing its disapproval of the practice of making gender-related alterations to Scripture, cautioning its members and the larger Christian community against using the TNIV, and imploring IBS from further gender-neutral efforts in Bible translations.
• July 2, 2002 – CBMW issued a press release regarding the IBS and FBA announcements (see June 11 and 24 above). The release points out that the FBA guidelines, within which the TNIV was allegedly claimed to fall, do not offer any specific governance over gender-related language.CBMW executive director Randy Stinson remarked, “[I]t was misleading for Zondervan and IBS to claim that they rejected the Colorado Springs Guidelines for the FBA guidelines because it implied that the FBA had a different, yet more widely accepted set of rules for gender-related language. In fact, the FBA guidelines make no mention of gender-related language at all.”
• July 27, 2002 – World magazine published a story entitled, “We Could Not Be Intimidated,” dealing with two issues:
  • Zondervan and IBS threatened to pull their advertising from Charisma, Christian Retailing and four other magazines owned by Strang Communications because Strang agreed to run ads placed by CBMW that included the statement signed by 100 Christian leaders (see June / July 2002 above). According to Stephen Strang, president of Strang Communications, “We appreciate our advertisers. We don’t kowtow to them.”
  • In the same article, World also reported on the fallout within the Forum of Bible Agencies (FBA) over the June 11 IBS press release claiming FBA endorsement of the TNIV (see June 11 and 24 above).
• September 4, 2002 – Zondervan mailed a packet to each member of the Evangelcial Theological Society. The packet included a TNIV New Testament and essays by evangelical scholars Dr. D. A. Carson and Dr. Craig L. Blomberg. It also included an issue of the IBS publication Light Magazine containing an interview with IBS president Peter Bradley (see November 2002 below).
• October 7, 2002 – Christianity Today published “The TNIV Debate”, an interaction between New Testament scholars Dr. Vern Poythress and Dr. Mark Strauss. Each scholar presented his position and then had the opportunity to respond.
• November 2002 – CBMW mailed the Fall 2002 issue of the Journal for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood to each member of the Evangelical Theological Society. This issue of the journal was almost entirely devoted to addressing the TNIV. Among the articles were two by Dr. Wayne Grudem and Dr. Vern Poythress that interacted with the essays and articles included in the Zondervan mailing (see September 4 above).
